This article could also be titled “Something Pretty Amazing Happened on the NYC Ad Jobs & Networking Facebook Page: Part 2.” We love this Facebook page because the people on it tend to be creative types whose professional lives are typically more transitory and chaotic than other professions; creative careers and ad agency jobs are especially susceptible to churn. From writers and designers to photographers and producers, creative people are a tribe unto their own, and they’ve had enough of being treated like shit from recruiters.

The backlash began with a simple and sincere post from Xavier Mantilla, and took off from there (see below). Though there are several notable narratives throughout these comments, rants, and insights, the prevailing theme is about a powerful human experience: being disrespected. Creative types are well aware that life is not fair and that great jobs are difficult to find, and even harder to land. There are few seasoned creative people who complain about life being unduly cruel to them; the creative life is inherently full of disappointment, struggle, and rejection.

So, in light of this continuous strife, for creative people the hallmark of civilization is respect—being treated like a decent, hardworking, and valuable human being. The rest is just reality. But respect is something people can control, something they can give, or – as is apparently the case with recruiters – not give. Creatives have had enough of being chased, ignored, flattered, led on, misled, and ultimately, ghosted. The frustration is real and understandable. There simply must be a better way. Or, at the very least, an explanation. Any recruiters care to comment? This dark corner of creative careers could use a little light.
